Illegal visa racket alert for workers

WORKERS will continue to struggle on low salaries until Bahrain takes serious action to tackle the illegal visa racket, according to unionists.

Powerful people are still profiting by selling work visas on the black market, despite efforts by the newly-formed Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) to catch visa cheats, according to the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions.

LMRA role highlighted

MANAMA: The Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) takes particular care over the kingdom’s financial industry as it is a major provider of employment for Bahranis and expats.

That was the message from LMRA chief executive officer Ali Radhi at a lunch hosted by the Bahrain Association of Banks at the Sheraton Hotel yesterday.

Employment rate rises 10.5 per cent

MANAMA: Employment in Bahrain shot up by 10.5 per cent during the third quarter of this year, it was revealed yesterday.

Most of the jobs went to expatriates, with Bahraini employment up by 3.5pc, compared to a 4.1pc growth in the previous quarter, said the report published in the Bahraini Labour Market newsletter.

Visas ultimatum

EXPATRIATES with expired visas will have no more chances to renew them after Wednesday, a Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) official declared yesterday.

Since the LMRA took over the responsibility of issuing work visas in July, people whose visas expired in the last 12 months were given a chance to renew them, said LMRA e-services and acting public relations manager Waheed Al Balushi.
