Foreigners working on expired visas in Bahrain will face prosecution or deportation, under a new system
The new Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) initiative comes into effect as part of efforts to clean up the labour market.
Employers had been given until yesterday to renew the expired visas of their staff.
Those visas that have not been renewed will be automatically cancelled as of today and the holders have until the end of this month to leave the country, according to an LMRA statement.
Companies will no longer be able to renew expatriate visas at any time and must now submit relevant application documentation six months before visas are due to expire.
Speaking to our sister newspaper Gulf Daily News, an LMRA official said any expatriates caught working on an expired visa could be fined and prosecuted.
The move follows the introduction of a BD10 monthly levy for expat workers last year.-TradeArabia News Service

This is absolutely ridiculous. A lot of workers are still trapped due to money craving sponsers. These poor people are suffering on a day today basis and the govern ment is busy trying to wipe them out like scum. As a human rights activist and a fellow Bahraini I would like to plead with the government to extend the time period of the visa legalisation.
In most of the cases the sponsers are holding the passports of the workers and they are not able to go to their home country even after the expiry of the visa.So in such cases legal action should be taken against the sponsers. Not against the workers because they are helpless.
I do agree with Jaffer Ali. Government has to take some action else these national bahrain will suck up these foreigners. When we come here to Bahrain we abide all the laws and work hard to earn money what islam about all these things we forgot.
I do agree.
but for a example:
“A poor worker who have family here with his children”
What if his sponsor not giving him good salary + not giving their passport’s
and not renewing his & his family visa’s
so you know what does exactly mean of it?
Obviously it mean: expired CPR + expired + Driving Licence + Illegal Worker.
So the worker will got no clue to remain as illegal.
just imagine if he have expired visa from 5 or 6 years, how he will manage the money to renew his & his family visa by giving ” Five year fine” + LMRA Fee? cause he don’t have anything! to even buy a good meal.
so far under a new law for those who have expired visa’s will face prosecution or deportation, from 1st of October 2009
so what if tomorrow that worker caught. cause having no visa
will his sponsor go back to him? NO!!!!
Hopefully The worker will remain under custody until someone go back to him.
and how his family gonna faces the problems.
Thank you.
most of the workers are very poor, give them a chance to change sponsor after expiring their visa,if somebody giving them sposorship and job
What will happen to those whose visa expired but they have on-going case in the court, will they be excempted from this LMRA ruling. Can they still renew visa after the court case is completed.
Yeah. That is right. Always blame the sponsors. What about the employees who have left the company but not left the country? They get terminated and their passports are returned, but they still do not leave the country. What about them? These and many issues like this. Do not always blame the employer. There are two sides to every coin.
I am aggried with jone. The probloms from both sids. Some employees are not good and some sponsors are not good. I hade experianced to both. Two of my friends are working from more than two years with his sponsor. But his sponsore did not pay lmra monthaly fees from lomg time. Now his sponsor made censlation from imigratiom and said to them you can change your sponsor ship any where else, but he did not censle from lmra. So now lmra is not isshuing them new vissa even they has good offer.
But one bangladeshi held a false case in court against his sponsor.
I don’t agree with this.my Dad submitted for visa renewal on january 2008. were he had time upto february 14th 2008 for visa expiry, but authorities doesnot renewed it,saying he is above 60years.he is a person having full responsibility of a construction firm. he has to get outstanding payments,he approched lmra several times to make his stay legal, but invain
so, i request authorities to consider or make special provision for such cases and let them stay legal.
