LMRA allows under travel ban expats to obtain work permits

The Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) announced today that it has reached an agreement with the Ministry of Justice regarding expats with a court-ordered Travel Ban, where they will be allowed to obtain a Work Permit, and subsequently legalize their presence in the Kingdom.

The agreement pertains to those who are under a court-ordered travel ban due to financial debt or civil claims and are barred from leaving the kingdom until these debts are settled.

LMRA Chief Executive Ausamah Alabsi, who also chairs the National Committee for Combating Trafficking in Persons thanked HE The Minister of Justice, Islamic Affairs, and Endowment Shaikh Khalid Bin Ali Al-Khalifa, for his understanding and humanitarian gesture, which will give a large number of expatriates the opportunity rectify their legal position, earn a living, and pay their debts in a manner corresponding with the laws of Bahrain, and at the same time protects them from being exploited.

Mr. Alabsi further explained: “there will be no additional requirements or paperwork by the the LMRA for applications relating to such cases; it will be received and handled like any other application, and they can apply for either renewal of their work permits, or a new work permit with a new employer under the Mobility procedure”.

He added: “while the agreement with the Ministery of Justice, Islamic affairs and Endowment is valid indefinitely, it comes while there are still 7 weeks remaining in the Amnesty Period, thus poseing a great opportunity for this group of people to sort out their legal situation without further penalties or fees, and we ask them to avail of the time remaining”.

The Amnesty Period which started on July 1st and ends December 31st has so far attracted over 25,000 illegal workers to either find new legal employment, or leave the country with the possibility of returning in the future under new legal employment. Mr. Alabsi reiterated: “we are aware that many illegal workers who have decided to go back home are delaying it to the last possible time, which is understandable, but they must keep in mind that December is a busy month for the airlines, and that it is not guaranteed that they find a seat on flights if they delay their departure to the last minute, meanwhile the Amnesty expires on December 31st without extensions or exceptions”.

  1. Thanks to LMRA regarding this news .After six years i can make breath in open air. My self and other thousand people will say thanks to LMRA .Today i can sleep well. Again lot of thanks to LMRA from me and my family. Good luck and best regards.

  2. Regarding the Amnesty.
I wish to hire a housemaid and find out that she has been blacklisted by her previous employer.
The previous employer doesn’t want to cooperate hence we cannot proceed with the visa process.
Is there any help from the LMRA or immigration or any other government body that we can seek for.
Please do not respond call the LMRA hotline because I already did and the customer service seems confused and doesn’t really know what to answer (or I think she’s not aware of the amnesty program).
    Thanks!

  6. Respected Sir,
    Asalam o alaikum

On 28th March 2013, I had got the offer letter with contract from a private printing press shop. Our contract was for 2 years with 250/- BHD per month salary plus accommodation and transportation. After few months my owner started teasing me, he didn’t pay salary on time and plus he forced us to sit extra till late nights and work for him. He also took our passports and threatened us many times
After a year, I had sent him resign through وزارة البريد post office, and tell him personally as well but he gave me threat that I won’t give you your passport and make your life difficult.
then after( LMRA change my visa new owner ) but
Now they have created fake case against me and put travel ban on me. I am unable to leave country and couldn’t find better job here because I have no visa. Since last 2.5 year I hadn’t met my family.
Seeking for your support and guidance once to resolve this matter, So I can travel to my country .

    Regard ,

    Zubair siddiqui
