‘Firms should pay for expat workers’

Companies in Bahrain will be bound to pay the annual fee for all their local and expatriate workers in exchange for the government-provided medical services after a new health care system for the private sector came into effect yesterday.

Minister of Health Sadiq Al Shehabi said that the companies with less than 50 employees would have to take part in the facilities provided by the ministry.

Companies with more than 50 workers could either strike a deal with the licensed health insurance companies or establish a 24-hour medical facility.

“Firms using the ministry health care facility will have to pay an annual BD72 per expatriate worker and BD22 for a local employee,” he explained.

The fees of the expatriate employees must be paid during the renewal process of the commercial registration of the companies. Meanwhile, for the Bahraini employees the fees will be merged with the monthly social insurance fees.

Commenting on the issue, the Vice President of the Administration and Financial Affairs in the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) Shaikh Fawaz bin Hamad Al Khalifa, stressed on the importance of the companies to adhere to the system and maintain paying the fees. He said that the fees collection process has already been started.

As an expatriate, after paying this fees we are charged BD: 3.000 at the hospitals. When we inform the reception in Health Centers, they say it has been cancelled.

If this has been cancelled why we are paying to LMRA. What is the benefit? Except we and the owner of the company loose.

In instances where the company has a comprehensive medical insurance for all of its expatriate employees and their dependents, is the company still required to pay for the medical insurance charges.

  4. Good day!

I just want to have more clarifications with this matter.

First, who’s going to pay these fees? is it the company or us as expats? what if my sponsor will less the fees in our salary, is it legal for the company to do it?

Second, what are my benefits with these medical assistance? What are the services the hospital has to offer us? ( example : monthly general check-up, blood test, urine test, teeth cleaning, x-ray and etc..) Can I avail of these services for free?

    Hoping for your reply soon.

Thanks and have a nice day!

  5. Presently for Senior citizen above 60, LMRA requires a 2 year health Insurance policy for all expatriates.

With the introduction of this new LMRA fees for EXPAT workers, above 60, can the proof of a One year Health Insurance Policy, be taken as document to waive the BHD 72/- fees , for such Expat workers. Such Expat workers will not take the services of Ministry of Health if they have such Individual Health Policy

  6. Dear Sir,

Been trying to communicate the benefits of paying the health care amount of BD72/- per year of each expatriate employee to the email you keep on referring on the above comments. But it always has the delivery failure response. Also, I have called the call centre number 17288888 and was referred to another telephone number; 17286222 that has nobody to pick up the line. It just keeps on ringing.

Also, we have already checked the Ministry of Health website to look if there was something there to discuss the details about this ruling but there was nothing.

Kindly give us email address that can receive emails and answer our queries or any contact number who will have somebody to receive the calls and address our concerns.

    Thank you.
